Lightyear One Electric Car Prototype Records 710 Km Of Mileage on a Single Charge

Remember lightyear One, a unique electric car equipped with solar panels from the front end to the back? The car was not delivered to consumers this year as originally planned, but the realization continues to be close to reality, especially after the latest testing run by its development team. Housed in a testing circuit in Germany, the Lightyear One prototype was driven relentlessly at speeds of 85 km/h for nearly nine hours. During that time, the prototype managed to record a distance of 710 km before the battery ran out of power. This figure is not too far from the estimate given two years ago (725 km).

Housed in a testing circuit in Germany, the Lightyear One prototype was driven relentlessly at speeds of 85 km/h for nearly nine hours. During that time, the prototype managed to record a distance of 710 km before the battery ran out of power. This figure is not too far from the estimate given two years ago (725 km).

Even better, this achievement can be realized by relying only on a battery with a capacity of 60 kWh, proving that Lightyear One really has a very high efficiency. Based on lightyear team calculations, this prototype has an energy consumption of only 85 Wh/km, or approximately 50 percent lower than the most efficient electric cars on the market today.

Okay, this car is proving efficient, but what about the performance of its solar panels, which is none other than one of its main selling points? From the results of this test, the solar panel successfully produced a total energy of 3.45 kWh. Lightyear itself estimates that its solar panels are capable of contributing an extra 12 km of mileage per hour to ideal 'sunbathing' conditions.

Since all this was achieved using prototypes, Lightyear's team is enthusiastic that they can still improve their efficiency even further. They believe efficiency is the most important factor of an electric car, as batteries are the most expensive components of production costs. If the efficiency is high, it means that the embedded battery does not need to be too large capacity, so in the end the selling price can be more affordable.

Lightyear so far still has a lot of homework to do, one of which is collision testing. A total of 946 units of the exclusive version of Lightyear One will be produced starting in the second half of 2022, while the mass sale is scheduled to take place in 2024
