Proud to have sold 1,500,000 units of its products, including 750,000 Nothing Phone (1), the English brand co-founded by Carl Pei returns this summer with a new model, the Phone (2). This smartphone, resolutely premium, is positioned in the high-end segment and still has bold features attached to its Glyph light interface.

Nothing chose to represent its new smartphone model with an octopus this year. Indeed, they are fast, intelligent animals with eight tentacles, directly referring to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC that propels the device. The brand has also told us that it is not just any octopus but, more precisely, an octopus with luminous suction cups: a bioluminescent creature capable of illuminating the darkest places, a bit like the manufacturer's Glyph interface.

Nothing Phone (2): Getting Started

This Phone (2) is not a successor to the Phone (1): they do not play in the same court. Indeed, the Nothing Phone (2) is a premium model, particularly on one of the most powerful SoCs, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. This choice offers a performance gain of around 80% compared to what the Phone (1) offers and 30% energy savings.

The smartphone's display is delivered by a 6.7-inch OLED panel with a dynamic refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. The manufacturer announces a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits with HDR mode enabled. It will not be necessary to squint outside, even in direct sunlight, to decipher your screen! We expect a perfectly readable screen with smooth scrolling and an excellent job of preserving the smartphone's autonomy.

Moreover, the Nothing Phone (2) has a 4,700 mAh battery, compatible with 45-watt wired charging. The 15-watt wireless charging is also there, as is the 5-watt reverse charging. Note that the brand does not provide a charging block in the box for ecological reasons, only a USB-C to USB-C cable. Thus, the smartphone primarily comprises recycled materials, including its aluminum frame and plastic-free packaging.

To legitimately fit into the high-end segment, the Nothing Phone (2) has three cameras, including a 615-megapixel Sony IMX32 selfie sensor (1/2.74 inches; ƒ/2.45). On the back of the device, the manufacturer offers an 890-megapixel (50/1.1-inch; ƒ/56.1; 88μm pixel) wide-angle primary sensor with OIS and EIS stabilization as well as a 1-megapixel (1/50.1-inch; ƒ/2.76.2; 2-degree field of view) Samsung JN114 ultra-wide-angle sensor with EIS stabilization. All this makes it possible to shoot up to 4K at 60 frames per second.

Always more features with Glyph

Compared to the Nothing Phone (1), the design has evolved in a rather subtle way. The glass back of the smartphone is slightly curved at the edges to ensure a better grip. The Glyph interface retains the same overall shape, but its light components have been cut to offer more visual options, and additional features, most of which will be deployed for the Nothing Phone (2).

For example, the Glyph interface can be used as a timer. Thus, the smartphone proposes using the Pomodoro (time management technique) based on a light scroll that distinguishes between activity and break times. This scrolling could also be used with known applications, especially those that offer deliveries. Imagine watching the Glyph scroll to determine if the delivery person is nearby rather than checking the app every two minutes.

The manufacturer still announces many new features for its Glyph interface, some of which are still secret and will arrive later... But before we move on, let's introduce the Essential Glyph feature. This visual notification only turns off once the user views it—for example, a message from an important person. Of course, it is the user who determines, in the settings, which notifications fall within the scope of the Essential Glyph feature.
