PES becomes eFootball and switches to a free-to-play format
The rumors were right! Konami has just confirmed the move to free-to-play for its football simulation. And the change goes even further since PES gives way to eFootball. The end of an era
Thus, given its new business model, the game will roll out its content over the months.
PES makes its revolution
The Pro Evolution Soccer franchise, or Winning Eleven in Japan, will undergo a major change this year. Indeed, faced with competition from electronic arts' unstoppable FIFA, Konami has decided to change its mind by announcing a new game soberly titled eFootball. This time, exit the annual releases and place them to a free title regularly updated over the years.
With this free-to-play format, the Japanese publisher hopes to attract a new audience. If football can be downloaded for free, microtransactions will inevitably be part of the game. For example, some game modes can be added in the form of paid DLC. In the radius of the changes, Konami also formalizes the passage on the Unreal Engine 4 instead of its famous Fox Engine.
A fairly clear roadmap
When it launches in early fall, football will invite its players to participate in local matches. Several teams such as FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester United or Arsenal will be available. In addition, cross-generation functionality will also be required. Through the latter, PS4 players will face those on PS5 and Xbox One users those on Xbox Series X|S.
Later this fall, Konami will add a mode to build a team by unlocking players and online leagues to face opponents around the world. The cross-platform will also be launched between the consoles (PlayStation/Xbox) and the Steam version of the game. A Battle Pass system (called Match Pass) will also be introduced to unlock exclusive items (items, players...).
Finally, during the winter, football will debut on iOS and Android. These versions will be playable on the controller, and the cross-platform will be extended to mobile players. eSports tournaments will be launched at this time of year.
Konami will provide additional information as early as August.
