Sony DualSense Edge Review: A Premium Gaming Experience

The Sony DualSense Edge is the latest addition to the PlayStation 5 gaming ecosystem. Two years after the launch of the PS5, Sony has finally decided to release a premium-oriented lever with interchangeable sticks, removable joystick modules, pallets, and a good configuration of all control surfaces. The DualSense Edge offers many functionalities to satisfy players and demand players, but is the high price tag justified?

Design and Build Quality

The DualSense Edge comes in a rigid case of outstanding invoices. Both the exterior and interior of the case breathe quality, and you immediately feel that you are in the presence of a premium product. From a design point of view, the DualSense Edge remains very close to the original controller, but some welcome innovations are on the program. The most interesting is the addition of a new surface "grip" under the handles, significantly improving the grip during long play sessions.

Customization Possibilities

The touchpad adorns with a black mat, and the surface under the joysticks passes from a mat material to a shiny version which you will quickly cover with traces of fingers and other dirt. However, the DualSense Edge offers advanced customization possibilities, such as two sliders that allow you to adjust the stroke of the adaptive triggers on three levels, allowing players to modify the original setting to deactivate the haptic returns, suitable for players who want maximum responsiveness in competitive FPS, for example.

Additionally, two locations under the DualSense Edge can accommodate pallets or half-doms to add two additional buttons, which easily come to find accommodation thanks to a magnetic surface. On top of the joystick, two new "Fn" buttons under the joysticks will allow you to change the profile on the fly.The DualSense Edge is delivered with four additional sticks, recalling the PS3 era with its rounded dome. The mechanism seems solid, and only time will tell us if sustainability exists. A small button under the joystick allows you to unlock the hood protecting the joystick modules. Sony already offers the joystick modules for KSH 3,381.66

Pallets or half-domes, it's up to you. As in the competition, Sony offers to add two additional buttons under the joystick, allowing you to trigger an action without lifting the sticks' fingers via the annular or the little ones. However, we regret not being able to map a key combination like R2 + Triangle, for example. We must be content with a unique touch among those available on the controller.A long USB cable is supplied, as is a system for mechanically blocking it with a lever.

Software Layer

The software layer of the DualSense Edge also works very well. During the first connection of the controller, a tutorial guides you step by step. The different screens allow fine adjustment of key allocations, inert zones of joysticks and triggers, the intensity of vibration/haptic feed, and configure all of this in (profiles up to 30), which change on the fly from pressure on one of the "Fn" + Cross/Square/Triangle/Round/Menu keys.

Sensation and Battery Life

The regulars of the DualSense will be on the known ground. The controller is still slightly heavier than the DualShock 4, but it's not so heavy that it becomes uncomfortable to hold. The buttons and thumbsticks are still in the same place and still have the same level of resistance and travel. The touchpad is still there but is much larger and more responsive. The new "Create" button is also present, which can be used for various functions such as taking screenshots and recording gameplay.

One of the most notable changes in the DualSense is the addition of haptic feedback. This feature allows the controller to simulate different textures and vibrations, making it feel like you're holding different objects in-game. For example, when you're driving a car, you can feel the engine's rumble and the road's sensation beneath you. When you're firing a gun, you can feel the recoil in your hands. This feature adds a whole new level of immersion to the gaming experience.

Another new feature of DualSense is the adaptive triggers. Depending on the in-game action, you can program these triggers to provide different resistance levels. For example, if you're pulling a bowstring, the triggers will become harder to pull the further back you pull the string. This adds a new level of realism and immersion to the gameplay.

The DualSense also has a built-in microphone, allowing you to communicate with other players online without needing a separate headset. The controller also has a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can still use your headset. The DualSense has a built-in rechargeable battery, which can be charged using the USB-C cable. According to Sony, the battery life is around 4-8 hours, depending on usage.

Overall, the DualSense is a significant improvement over the DualShock 4. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers add a new level of immersion to the gaming experience, and the built-in microphone and larger touchpad are welcome additions. The controller is slightly heavier than the DualShock 4, but it's not so heavy that it becomes uncomfortable to hold. Overall, it's a great controller that enhances the gaming experience.
